Mac OSX Quickstart.
The QuickStart Guide is the shortest possible tutorial to show you how to set up Loa PowerTools on OS X (Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion only), using Apple’s Mail application.
These instructions will probably give you enough hints to help you figure out how to configure most other mail programs (like ThunderBird or Entourage), but Eudora is more difficult and requires special instructions. For assistance with , contact our support staff at: carriers@loapowertools.com.
Super QuickStart
For those of you with some mail-client experience, here’s a tiny set of instructions that will probably be enough to get you going:
- Get Loa PowerTools, unzip it, and move it to the Applications folder as you would any other application.
- Run Loa PowerTools and set up your free demo account.
- Tell it what SMTP port to use (we recommend port 2525).
- Configure your mail application to use localhost as the SMTP server using the port you chose in Step 3.
- Once you have tried Loa PowerTools, upgrade your account to give you more capacity.

I. Get Loa PowerTools
Be sure you have Loa PowerTools downloaded from our Web site (the download page is here). Once you have it, it should unzip, and give you an icon than looks something like this:

Then:
- Drag Loa PowerTools into your Applications folder.
II. Launch Loa PowerTools
On Mac OS X, you don’t have to do anything special to Loa PowerTools to configure it properly. But you do have to run it to get it to work:
- Find Loa PowerTools in your Applications folder, and launch it.
Loa PowerTools will download the latest updates from the Internet. It won’t take long. Eventually, you’ll see something like this dialog box:

- Click on Create New Loa Account.
- Follow the prompts in the account wizard:

When you open your account, we only need your e-mail address and password, but the rest of the information would be helpful to us, if you don’t mind sharing it (we have a pretty good privacy policy, which you are encouraged to read). You’ll eventually return to the dialog from Step 1 (above).
- Fill in your e-mail address and password, and click Login.
You should see a dialog box giving you some hints on setting up your mail client. Click on OK and launch Mac OSX's Mail application.
III. Tell Mail To Use Loa PowerTools To Send Mail
- Launch Apple Mail and choose Preferences from the Mail menu.
- Select Accounts, and then select an account you wish to use with Loa PowerTools.
- Pull down the Outgoing Mail Server popup. Choose Edit Server List. If you do not have a server called localhost, then create it. Whether you have to create localhost or you already have a server called localhost, select localhost, click the Advanced button, then set the Server port to 2525:

Do not turn on Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).
- Click on the OK button.
- For each of your accounts, change the name on the pull-down menu for Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) to localhost. Note that Loa PowerTools can even be used with IMAP accounts.
- Close Mail Preferences.
That’s it! The e-mails you send will now use Loa PowerTools to send mail.
Extras
I. Auto-launch Loa PowerTools
Before you send e-mai, Loa PowerTools must be running. While you may wish to launch it manually each time, most people find Apple's auto-launch feature an easier way to make sure Loa Powertools is operating when you need it. To make Loa Powertools launch when your system boots:
- Open System Preferences from the Apple Menu, and click on the Accounts icon, and click on Login Items:

- Click on the + to add an item, navigate to the Applications folder (or wherever you keep Loa PowerTools) and Add it.
- Close System Preferences.
That's it. From this point on, Loa PowerTools will always be running when you need it.
